Period after D&C?

My clinic won't schedule K's SHG or give us our IVF calendar** until she gets a visit from AF. Tomorrow will be 4 weeks since K had the D&C. So, we are wondering how long it took others to get their first period following a D&C. Also, if you could share what it was like that would be great. I'm not much help in this area because I didn't get a period following my D&C, but that's because I never get one (thanks PCOS!). I appreciate you sharing this with us.

**I should mention that I WILL get a hypothetical calendar from my clinic before the day is over! I've found that persistance and a tad bit of pushiness slathered in butter is helpful in the IF world. I have being sweet, yet demanding down to a science! ;) K and I are both planners and like to know what's in our future, so we just need to know when we might be doing an ER and ET!

Sorry I cannot offer any personal experience on this exact question, however, I can say from experience that following a natural miscarriage, it took me about 5-6 weeks to get my period once the bleeding had stopped from the m/c.

Thinking of you as always.

I hear ya on being pushy in a "nice" way. I'm also an information nut - I need to know everything about this process!! At this point, I definitely know as much as the IVF nurses and maybe even as much as the REs.

Can't give you any info on the AF situation after a m/c. But I hope the bitch shows up sooner rather than later. :) Oh, and my retrieval is set for Wednesday. Keep your fingers crossed, please!!

Hey we're going to the clinic on Friday, our K did not have a D&C nor AF but will be doing a sonohystogram on friday to check things out and make sure that she does not need a d&c - also we too will not have calendar until she gets AF - I know that everyone is anxious to move forward, but, I think the time is for the healing, natures way of taking care of us I suppose, but, I'm a planner and want a timeline & Plan.
take care Niki.

Both times I had D&C's it took 35 days to get my menses, I am a 32-33 day cycle typically.

You could ask for a progesterone level for K. That would tell you if she's ovulated yet.

I would think normally 4-6 weeks is pretty average. Though I haven't had a D&C, I don't think it's the procedure that really matters but rather the hormones and after a pregnancy it takes usually 4-6 weeks for hormones.

after my D&C it was exactly 4 weeks and it was one hella of a period.
after that I had another one in 28 days and then one 14 days later.

The OB told me that it is right around the 4 week mark...

Hoping it is not to rough on her, but my OB did say that having a rougher one means all is back to normal.

I read your post about going ahead with K... awesome news..

Not sure about bleeding after D&C, but wanted to say I'm continuing to keep you, K, and your DH in my thoughts and prayers. I'm just catching up on your last few posts and am thrilled for you that K has agreed to continue the surrogacy process with you. :)

I really need to have "a plan" too. I hope that you do get a plan by the end of the day. It helps to know what you are working towards. Hugs. C xx

I have PCOS too so it was around 4 months until I got af after the D&C. So I have no info but wanted to tell you I am thinking about you and hope it happens soon so you can get started!

I'm not sure how helpful this will be, but I'll give you what it was like for me. I was 16w4d when I went into labour and lost our baby due to an incompetent cervix. My placenta would not de-tach so 3 days later I had a D&C. Following that I bled for 14ish days and then spotted for another 4-5 before it finally started, then finally cycle day 52 my period finally returned. That is 52 days counting from the D&C.
"Typically" my cycles are 32-33CD. Anyway when it did finally arrive it was normal, just like my regular period. No heavier or lighter then normal. I was anxious for it to show up bc my OBGyn did not want us TTC again until I had my first "real" period after the D&C.

gah that should be finally stopped, not 'started'. And I meant to add that it's been 6m and I finally had my first "normal" length/ovulate on time cycle last cycle. I agree with the other commenter. Everyone is different. I know some on a support board I am on got their period like clockwork and pg the next cycle while others like me took a while to get it again and took 4-5m to get pg again. Of course it is different in K's and your situation. :0)

I think her period should come one month after her HCG drops below 5. She needs to ovulate to get her period. It just depends on quickly it drops. Hopefully the number was already on it's way down and dropped to 5 quickly.

I got my period about 3.5-4 weeks after the D&C and it was really light. The next few ones were light too. Turns out I had an adhesion (scar tissue making the sides of the uterus essentially grow together) which can happen after a D&C. This was only discovered because we were gearing up for a FET and the clinic required a sonohystogram. I think the lighter period is a warning sign - since part of the uterus is closed off not as much lining is shed during the period. So be on the lookout for that.

I'm arriving from LFCA and am so sorry to hear about your loss. After I miscarried last year and went through a D&C, I was told to expect my period approximately a month afterwards. Instead, it was over 8 weeks before mine appeared. Now I normally have pretty regular periods, but I am by no means a ruler on what 'normality' should be measured against, but I understand the frustration. I think that a period is so important not just for moving on treatment wise, but also emotionally. I hope AF comes soon! Take care!

I had my D&E 5 weeks ago and just got a little bit of light spotting today that I hope will turn into my period. My doc says that 4-6weeks is normal. Hopefully she'll get hers soon... I know how much the waiting sucks.

6 weeks once and longer another time when I had a hormone bleed where I thought it was my period.

Good luck.

Well, I'm three weeks post my d&c and no period - BUT - my doctor will let me start birth control pills as soon as my hCG goes below 5. I'll also schedule my HSG as soon as I hear for sure it is below 5. And that will be my lead up suppression cycle before my FET. He did it this way with a fresh cycle as well.

Good luck.

I dont know you but I wanted to chime in here. I had a D&E on March 18th (I was 18 weeks along) and I just got AF Sunday, exactly 33 days after the D&E. Good luck to you!
