Bleeding after D&C

Okay, girls I need you to share your experience with K regarding bleeding after a D&C. When I had mine I bleed for about a week ending with some spotting. As of yesterday K was still having a pretty heavy, period-like flow. She is worried that they did a poor job and that she has "retained products of conception", which will result in her needing to undergo a hysteroscopy. Of course I hope she's wrong and that the bleeding is normal and tapers off soon.

After my D&C I did need to have a hysteroscopy to remove "retained products of conception" that were left behind, which we discovered when my betas weren't dropping back to zero. Per my urging my ob did an SHG 8wks post D&C and saw "something" in my uterus. That something was removed during the hysteroscopy and was biopsied and found to be leftover tissue from the pregnancy. As soon as the tissue was removed my beta dropped to zero. For me that whole process added insult to injury and didn't allow me to have closure for the cycle and loss. I'm really hoping that K doesn't have to go through this as she's already had so much to endure. Please share with us how long you bleed after your D&C.

Please share with us your experience.

With my first surgery, I bled and cramped heavily for about a week and then it quickly tapered off. With the second, it was spotting for just a few days.

I would suggest she go in for a beta soon and see her level. Ugh, hang in there both of you. You can get through this...

I am new to your blog and sorry that you and K are having to go through this. With both of my D&Cs, I only spotted lightly for a few days and never had full flow. I too would recommend that she go for a beta soon.

Niki,

I think it was about 2 weeks for first one. I did have a bit of retained tissue but it cleared when I had first real period.

2nd d&c I think it was more like 8-9 days.

Sorry she's having a rough time. Hope she can avoid another procedure.

Thinking of you guys.

I am sorry K is still dealing with this. I have not had a D&C, but I just read on-line that bleeding can continue for up to 2 weeks. I hope it resolves itself soon. My thoughts are with both of you.

I had a diagnostic D&C and bled for at least a week afterwards. I don't remember it being heavy at all but these are different circumstances. The important thing is to check her beta numbers.

With my D&C I had some cramping and 'period' bleeding for about 2 weeks after and then some spotting. Who did the operation? My betas took awhile to drop as well. I hope everything is okay.

After mine it was lite for about 4 days then 6 days heavy-- to the point I was scared and going to go back to the OB. But then it just stopped.

next period was exactly 4 weeks later heavy, next was lite.

My OB assured me the more bleeding the better, that is telling K that they did not take too much out and her lining is not effected by the D&C which is something that can happen.

I think for me it just seemed like such a long time cause you had the bleeding with the m/c and then the D&C and more bleeding..

healing vibes to her.

i have had somewhere around 17 d&c's, none due to pregnancy. they were all to control some very out of control bleeding. with some of them i have had continued bleeding that lasted up to a week or two. i would say if she is still bleeding on monday, she should call the doctor and ask for a beta.

i am so sorry that she is having to go through this, on top of everything else.

you are such a great im to be so concerned for her.

sending you all hugs and good thoughts.

After my D & C (for retained uterine lining after delivery) I bled like a period for about 1 week and then had red spotting for about another week and then nothing. Hope this helps. I'm keeping you and the rest of your family in my thoughts...

I don't think my experience will be very helpful--I just had very light spotting for a day or two.
I know that's unusual though, and I had prepared for much worse. My doctor had said I would bleed heavily. Of course, I didn't get a normal cycle for three months after that.

I'm sorry to hear about her loss.

Mel said you were also looking for someone who's done acupuncture before retrieval--Pam at Blood Signs might be able to help. She did acupuncture before retrieval, and just got a positive beta.

Chiming-in kind of late here, but wanted to share what I experienced with my D&C's. After my first procedure, I bled heavily (some clots) for four days before I called the OB, went back in for an US and found-out I'd need a second D&C to completely clear my uterus.

After the second surgery, I only spotted lightly for 2-3 days. Even when I had retained products, my HCG continued to drop...so I'd press for an US if you have concerns! All my best to you...*hugs*

Well, I just had my d&c on Thursday and I'm still bleeding. Not nearly as heavily as before, but more than a panty liner at this point. I go for an hCG level 2 weeks after the surgery, and I'm guessing if it's not down to below 5, weekly after that.

I've had 4 d&cs in my lovely 2-something year career of TTC and my experiences with bleeding vary. After my very first pregnancy d&c, I had nothing on the day of the surgery. The next morning woke up to nightmarish cramps and dark red, heavy bleeding. This dark red "fresh wound" type bleeding continued for about 5-6 days as did the cramping. I also managed to pass some pregnancy / placental tissue. The second d&c I had was 5 weeks after our daughter was born dead at 21 weeks, my useless ob-gyn gave me a scan and said my uterus would "absorb" the matter. Two days later I had to have an emergency d&c for a postpartum haemorrhage to stop me from bleeding to death and nearly lost my uterus. After that d&c, I bled very very lightly - only for about 2-3 days if that, no bad cramps. My third d&c was for another m/c and I bled light red but still fresh for about 2 weeks, towards the end of the 2 week period the bleeding was really spotting. My fourth d&c which was part of a post m/c hysteroscopy was to simply remove any tissue if the doctor found any, guess he did, and I bled for a week and started spotting...and spotting... and spotting (my hcg hormone levels had been back to ground zero for quite some time but still) spotting.... and spotted for another week and got my period. I also had bad um, lactation issues, with the last m/c. Ain't life grand.

Sorry this is a bit long, I really hope that K's post d&c bleeding tapers off soon. Nothing worse than the physical reminder of what has been lost when you're trying to grieve and heal. Once the tissue has completely separated from the uterus is when the hcg levels start to decrease, I'm not sure how long she has been bleeding, but I wouldn't leave it more than 3 weeks in total without seeing the doctor again...

I'm sorry that you've had to bear this ...
xx

New to your blog but came across it because I am trying to find some answers as to why my d&c experiences have been so difficult.

After my first d&c (blighted ovum) a year ago I had some heavyish bleeding and spotting for about 5 days with cramping on and off. It seemed like a heavy period to me. In the middle of the night on day 6 post d&c, I woke to severe cramping and red "fresh wound" bleeding. My dr. had me come in first thing, and tried to see if she could see/grab any retained product then and there with speculum and forceps -- ouch! She set me up for an emergency d&c and I passed what was left on the way to the hospital (like an idiot I walked even though it was only next door). After the second d&c (now what I assume was post-m/c) I had no cramping and minimal spotting for a day or so.

I had my third d&c (another blighted ovum) on April 27th, and I felt great that night and the next morning. The next night, however, I had brutal cramping, passing of tissue and heavy, heavy bleeding. Because I was getting on a plane the next morning for a much-needed weekend getaway, I did not call the doctor but decided to "tough it out" and let it pass. This continued for about a day and a half, and then everything relaxed. My bleeding has continued, though, since then, and I have had a few bouts of moderate cramping. The bleeding has been mostly brown, sometimes heavy, sometimes light. I am hoping it will end soon -- doctor didn't seem concerned at my post-op on Tuesday.

I feel like the poster child for retained product. It is like a slap in the face to have to keep dealing with this for so long -- I hope that you get past it soon, and I wish you the best of luck.

I ran into your blog while researching "normal" after d&c reactions. I found the story of your lil baby boy, Myles. He was so precious and I am so sorry that you had to lose him. The way you told his story was beautifully written and I hope that this pregnancy ( with twins ! ) goes perfect for you and congratulations!

I saw your blog after doing some research on google about bleeding after D&C. I am still bleeding after 5 weeks post D&C. I had an ultrasound which did not show anything definitive and it was my hcg levels (122 as of last week) that indicates I have retained products of conception. I'm not too thrilled about having a second D&C because I'm afraid of causing further trauma to cervix/uterus. But in your experience, is a second D&C a better option than waiting for my body to expel it? I am currently on antibiotics in case of infection but I'm not having a fever to indicate so.

I am 39, my husband of 15 months is also 39 and we've been trying to conceive for a year. This miscarriage was because of trisomy on chromosome 16. I had a previous miscarriage 7 years ago.

Thanks in advance for you thoughts and ideas.

I am also new to your blog...mine has been a long and painful story..had my d&c 2 months ago and never stopped spotting/bleeding on and off...on my 3 week check up my hcg levels were still at 220, some retained products were found through an ultrasound but I was told to wait if my body would clear it by itself..My hcg levels were controled every week, but although slowly dropping, they could still see tissue left in my uterus. Eventually, last week (7 weeks post d&c), with my hcg levels still at 14, I did a hysterocopy to remove the retained products. I spotted lightly for a couple of days and for the past 2 days I have been spotting heavily. Now back to the doctor tomorrow to find out what is wrong with me!!! I guess by now my levels must have droped all the way to zero, the left tissue should have been removed, so why I am still bleeding???? sigh... anyway, hope you all ladies have all your problems sorted out by now... :)
